RESPIRITORY INFECTIONS
First documented outbreak occurred in Vermont USA in 1981. 34 of 74 members of a social club who visited an inn in a skiing resort developed Pontiac fever. Epidemiology showed a highly significant association between developing symptoms and use of whirlpool spa. Legionella pneumophila and Legionella dumoffii were isolated from the whirlpool water but not from HWS, CWS, swimming pool, dehumidifiers.
First documented outbreak of Legionnaires disease from whirlpool spa was in Brighton UK in 1984. 26 cases of pneumonia associated with a hotel, 16 confirmed as legionnaires` disease. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 was isolated from CWS and HWS and from two whirlpool spas.
A case controlled study demonstrated a strong association with whirlpool use. Whirlpools had been poorly maintained and a log of water treatment and test results had not been kept. Filters were found to be clogged with hair and other debris.
