Drinking Water Supply
Drinking water is made available throughout the UK by Water Direct, on a planned or emergency basis whenever the piped supply is unavailable, insufficient or unusable. In order to maintain the flexibility and therefore the availability of our supply, drinking water is transported in either dedicated drinking water tankers, bowsers or bottled in various sizes. We operate several sites around the UK from which these assets can be deployed. The most popular response is with bottled water as this is the most easily mobilised to provide drinking water which is immediately usable to those affected by a supply loss.
Everyone needs drinking water! In the event of an unplanned water supply loss, a water utilities first priority is to domestic users. In some circumstances, for example where a water pipe is leaking within the curtilage of the property owner, there is no statutory obligation on the water utility to assist. This is true of domestic and commercial users.
The variety of different requirements is endless. We have supplied drinking water for hospitals, art exhibits, High St Banks, car manufacturers, food processors, music festivals, housing estates, film sets and airport construction sites. All have needed clean, readily accessible drinking water. It is common for drinking water bowsers to be requested where actually bottled water is a better alternative. If a large block of flats has been cut off, it is easy to deliver cases of bottled water, one for each flat. In other circumstances it could be that we can pump drinking water straight into existing water storage tanks.
Where there is insufficient on-site storage, it may be better to set up temporary drinking water storage tanks with a surrogate supply to kitchens and toilets etc. Such tanks can vary from 1,000 litres to 50,000 or 75,000 litres.
