A water supply emergency can develop quickly…

A burst main, water-quality incident, infrastructure failure or other unplanned interruption can leave a business without its normal water supply, sometimes with little warning.

For water-dependent organisations, the consequences can extend well beyond drinking water and staff welfare. Water may be essential for production, cleaning, cooling, healthcare, food preparation, sanitation or other critical processes.

When supply is lost, the immediate questions are straightforward: How much water do we have? How long will it last? And where will the next supply come from?

What happens when the mains water supply fails?

If a piped water supply fails or is interrupted for emergency works, Ofwat says the water company should tell customers that the supply has been interrupted, where an alternative supply can be obtained, when normal supply is expected to return and where further information is available.

Water companies must also provide at least 10 litres of water per person per day within the first 24 hours and maintain replacement supply until the piped supply is restored. This may be provided through bottled water, bowsers or standpipes.

For a business, however, this doesn’t necessarily solve the operational problem.

Ten litres per person may address essential personal requirements, but a manufacturing plant, hospital, food producer, hotel, data centre or other water-dependent operation could require thousands or hundreds of thousands of litres to maintain critical activities.

Businesses therefore need to understand the distinction between access to an emergency replacement supply and the alternative water supply required to maintain operations.

Don’t assume your normal supply will cover your operational requirement

This is where business continuity planning becomes important.

Ask: What would happen if our mains supply stopped today?

Then establish:

  • how much water is currently stored on site;
  • how quickly that water would be consumed;
  • which processes must continue;
  • the minimum volume needed to sustain them;
  • the required water quality;
  • which activities could temporarily stop;
  • when an alternative supply would need to arrive; and
  • how that water would physically enter the site.

This establishes your time-to-impact: the point at which loss of water begins to affect safe or effective operation.

If that time is shorter than the time required to find, organise and mobilise an emergency supplier, the organisation has a resilience gap.

What emergency water supply options are available?
