What Does an Interruption in Water Supply Mean to Your Business?

The Cost of a Water Supply Interruption: Is Your Business Prepared?

Industry News 9 May 25

In the last year alone, there were over 44,000 burst water mains in the UK.

Yet for many businesses, water supply still isn’t treated with the same level of risk and continuity planning as electricity, gas, or IT. That’s a dangerous oversight.

Here’s the reality. Businesses are responsible for their water supply – not the water utility company.

Water utilities are not responsible for supplying your business with emergency water during an outage. That responsibility lies solely with you.

Water utility companies aim to provide businesses with water 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, in the event of a water supply interruption, water companies are not obligated to immediately restore service.

Businesses can be left without water supply for hours, days, or even weeks, causing complete shutdowns for most operations.

Until a first-hand problem arises, an estimated two thirds of businesses don’t realise that their water utility company is not responsible for providing an alternative water supply during an outage. Sole responsibility lies with the business itself. Of those businesses who are aware of their responsibility, they often haven’t created truly actionable plans for managing an incident, nor have they considered the specific site requirements.

Where to start?

Water supply contingency planning needs to be tailored to your company’s individual needs, so:

  • Start with an onsite risk assessment.
  • Make sure you seek professional advice to ensure you don’t miss anything important.
  • Source an alternative supplier who can guarantee that they can cope with the pressures of a widescale incident and can evidence a smooth transition to that alternative supply.
  • Check the response times and make sure they meet your needs.
  • Ongoing maintenance, get your contingency plans reviewed annually or more often if procedural or organisational changes warrant it.

We can help take care of the details. Our comprehensive WaterTight service includes a site visit to evaluate risk, map storage and connection points, and an assessment of access points and the on-site equipment required to ensure we can deliver a rapid response.
