Standard Gas – Ensuring Reliable Water Supply for Sustainable Energy Solutions
Standard Gas is pioneering carbon-removing waste-to-energy technology, converting residual waste into heat, sequestrable solid carbon, and ultra-clean syngas for power generation, processing into renewable transport fuels and chemical feedstock, and potentially hydrogen production. The company has developed the SG100 plant, a six-tonne-per-hour non-burn waste processing system, validated by environmental accreditation standards. With a project pipeline for over 20 plants across the UK and the EU, Standard Gas is committed to delivering sustainable waste-to-energy solutions globally.
The Challenge
As it planned for the SG100’s commissioning and Site Acceptance Test, Standard Gas required a reliable and high-volume water supply to support the plant’s process cooling system. Key challenges included:
- High Water Demand: The plant required 7,000 litres per hour for cooling operations.
- Off-Grid Location: Scottow Enterprise Park, a former RAF base near Norwich, and home of the SG100 lacked sufficient on-site water infrastructure.
- Supply Constraints: access to the existing water supply was restricted due to concerns over potential disruption to other tenants.
To move forward with validation, Standard Gas needed a cost-effective, logistically viable, and scalable water supply solution.
The Solution
Standard Gas engaged Water Direct to provide a tailored water supply solution.
Water Direct delivered:
- A 30,000-litre water tanker delivery on rotation, continuously replenished to maintain a 500,000-litre on-site storage facility.
- A flexible delivery schedule, ensuring water availability every 12 hours to sustain operations.
- A cost-efficient and reliable solution.
Business Impact
Water Direct’s solution enabled Standard Gas to proceed with testing and position the SG100 for full-scale deployment.
Key benefits included:
- Operational Continuity: Uninterrupted water supply ensured the successful commissioning of the SG100 plant.
- Access to Remote Sites: The solution set a precedent for deploying Standard Gas plants in areas lacking conventional infrastructure.
- Cost Efficiency & Risk Reduction: Water Direct’s competitive pricing and on-demand supply minimised financial and operational risk.
