SUEZ Ensures Business Continuity with WaterTight

SUEZ Ensures Business Continuity with WaterTight

WaterTight 25 Jul 25

SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK is a leading waste management and resource recovery company, operating across hundreds of sites, and handling approximately 11 million tonnes of waste materials every year – a significant proportion of the UK’s total waste.

On behalf of Merseyside Energy Recovery Ltd, SUEZ works in partnership with Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority and other local organisations to manage the household waste generated daily across Merseyside and Halton. This includes the operation of Knowsley Rail Transfer Station, where all of this residual waste is shredded and bulked up onto trains before sent to an energy from recovery facility to be turned into electricity.

As part of their stringent safety protocols and insurance requirements, the facility maintains a one million litre fire suppression tank to mitigate fire risks and ensure operational continuity.

The Challenge

In 2024, a fire at the facility led to a complete operational shutdown. Once the fire was safely suppressed, the site needed to rapidly refill its one million litre fire suppression tank, with requirement to keep it at minimum required level in order to restart production safely.

Fire suppression is vital at the Knowsley site to protect both personnel and equipment, and it’s important that the system remains fully operational at all times.

The WaterTight Solution

Water Direct’s emergency response team swiftly mobilised to deliver the required volume of 600,000 litres of water within the critical 48-hour window. This timely action was essential for SUEZ. The successful delivery required precise coordination between Water Direct and SUEZ to ensure the water arrived on time and in full.

Following the successful intervention, SUEZ is now considering extending its partnership with Water Direct to include standby tankering services. This proactive approach aims to further reduce response times to 36 hours, enhancing operational resilience.

Client Testimonial

“The rapid response from Water Direct during an onsite fire at our Knowsley facility was critical in ensuring that we could operate safely following the fire suppression. Their speedy efforts helped to minimise our production downtime and we cannot fault their efficient service during that incident.”
